Saving Grace (Love Under the Big Sky #2.5) by Kristen Proby ~ #bookreview #novella #romance

by

Sparks fly like snowflakes when a klutzy but gorgeous novice crosses skis with a hot resort owner in this tempting tie-in to New York Times bestselling author Kristen Proby’s popular Love Under the Big Sky series!

Grace Douglas is on a practice run for her friend Cara Donovan’s bachelorette party ski weekend in Aspen. The problem is, despite living in rugged and picturesque Cunningham Falls, Montana, Grace is the clumsiest person ever born. To prepare for the trip, she is taking lessons at a local ski resort. She just prays that they have an ambulance on standby.

Sexy hotelier Jacob Berkley is ready to play ski instructor, but he quickly discovers that the best place on the mountain for Grace is in the lodge with a hot toddy. Her sense of humor and easy laugh quickly pull him in, and soon he’s determined to help her get off the bunny slope for a fun vacation with her friends. He just didn’t expect their steamy chemistry to trigger an avalanche of desire straight to his heart.

My Saving Grace Review . . .

This series is one of those series that the books are charming and sweet with some sizzle.  In this novella Grace Douglas is a bit of a klutz.  So, with the help of her friends, whom are all from this series, they decide she needs help for their upcoming bachelor party.  With this help they send Grace to the local mountain for some ski lessons.

As she's there, she catches the attention of the new billionaire in town, who happens to own the ski lodge.   After the initial meeting with Jacob Berkley, where Grace assumes he's her instructor and he chooses to omit the truth, they have an instant connection.

Grace is normally more cautious with these types of transactions, but you only live once so she jumps in.  Once she finds out the truth she's embarrassed, but Berk quickly changes her mind.  They heat up the sheets causing Berk to think this could be something real, while Grace thinks it can only be a fling.

With both of their assumptions they're miserable, causing one of them to finally pull up their 'grown up underwear' and take this relationship to where they want it, or it won't go anywhere.

This novella was sweet but in a few days it will be unforgettable.  It doesn't mean I didn't like it.  It just means it didn't leave an impact on me.

Blurb
They say a human being needs few things to exist.

A purpose,

Hope for the future,

But most of all...

Love.

Juliette Portland had all of those things. Her purpose was simple: Seduce. Deceive. Kill. Avenge. Once Dornan Ross and his sons were dead, her future was supposed to be clear. Her life was finally going to begin. And love... Against all the odds, she had the love of a boy she never thought she'd see again.

Everything should have gone according to plan. Everything should have been easy once Dornan was dead and buried.

Of course, life has a way of fucking with even the most meticulous of plans, and calling in owed debts can have the most severe consequences. Thanks to Juliette's diabolical retribution, the Il Sangue Cartel has lost it’s Kingpin, but not for long. There’s always someone in the wings, ready to step onstage and seize power. The Gypsy Brothers Motorcycle Club might be reeling from the deaths of their President and his six patch-wearing sons, but they’ve come back swinging.

Two deadly enemies, hundreds of bloodthirsty members, both sides eager to punish those that would try to topple them.

Two survivors, a man and a woman, forced to flee in the night.

For Juliette, vengeance is a hollow victory.

It never, ever ends.

The flames of incomplete vengeance are licking at her heels, and it’s only a matter of time before the Il Sangue cartel and the Gypsy Brothers catch her in their grip and crush her.

Unless she crushes them first.

EXCERPT ONE

I think about revenge a lot. When I’m thinking of the way the light dimmed in Dornan’s dying eyes and the way he said you killed my sons. How beautiful it was, and how hollow.
zero hour teaser 6.jpg

EXCERPT TWO
I don’t even stop to see what kind of furniture the room consists of. I throw Juliette on the floor and pounce on her like I’m a lion and she’s my catch.
My dick’s inside her within three seconds of the door closing, even though its dark in here, the only light from a couple of candles throwing off weak light. It could be the middle of the day and I wouldn’t have a clue, because all I can see is Juliette Portland underneath me, her legs spread and her pussy full of me. I put my hands around her neck. I want to squeeze. I want to choke her so fucking badly. Goddamn it! I stop grinding my cock into her. I just stop.
“I don’t want to hurt you,” I whisper in the dark. “Julz, the things I used to do in this place—I used to hurt people and get off on it. I don’t want to hurt you, baby.”
She reaches up and grabs hold of my face; I can just make out her eyes, her pupils almost swallowing any trace of green.
“Jase,” she breathes, “What if I want you to hurt me?”

zero hour teaser 2.jpg
EXCERPT THREE

“When you blank out. When you go away. You’re with him, aren’t you?”
I take a step back. I feel like I’ve been punched. I don’t respond. I don’t even say, who do you mean, because we both know who we’re talking about here.
“Hey,” Jase snaps. “I want you to answer me.”
I can’t breathe. It’s like Dornan’s in the room. I feel his warm breath on my neck, the way he always tasted the same in my mouth. Like salt and cigarettes.
“Answer me,” Jase growls.
I break. “What?” I hiss. “What do you want from me? Do you want me to lie? I was supposed to kill him, and that was meant to be the end of it.”
Jase looks like he’s about to hit another wall. Or me.
“He’s dead,” he spits, “He’s dead, but you’re the one who’s gone. I need you to come back. I need you to come back to me.”
“I don’t know how!” I yell.
“You’re not trying!” he explodes. “You just sit here, in your dark little universe, thinking about him! Did you think about him while I was fucking you last night? Huh?”

zero hour teaser 1.jpg

EXCERPT FOUR

They say the apple never falls far from the tree, and I’d say this apple never fucking fell, period. I’m the shiny apple that might’ve looked the best on the surface—different to the rest of them, full of promise that there was another way—but they broke me. They made me worse than any of them could ever be.
I hurt people. I hurt women.
I killed people.
And that’s not even the worst of it.
The first man I ever killed was John Portland, and I cried as I pulled the trigger. Yeah, I was a stupid kid and he begged me to do it, and yeah, it was a mercy killing, but it doesn’t matter. Point is, his life was the first one I took—I killed Juliette’s father, for Christ’s sake—and after I ended his life with a single bullet, delivered in the dark in a dirty basement, I didn’t stop.
I couldn’t stop.
The last person I killed was Donny, my last surviving brother, and that was eight months ago. I ripped his fucking eyeball out before I butchered him, and the one single thing that stopped me from dismembering him was knowing that Juliette was watching me. Her screams broke through my haze of red, as I took Donny’s own knife and sunk it into his flesh, again and again, so deep it hit bone more than once. I severed the tendons that made his arms work, so he was putty underneath me. I straddled my own brother and thrust upon him the vengeful punishment that they all deserved. For Julz. For my mother. For everything.
I killed him, and I haven’t killed since.
I’m hungry. My palms are itching. It’s torture.
I don’t know how long I’m going to last before I have to draw blood again.

Epilogue of a series

My Zero Hour Review . . .

I have to admit sometimes authors and readers don't want the story or series to end, which usually results in another book.  However, that can often back fire because it draws out the story too much. But this was the perfect scenario where its just an epilogue/novella.  This way we get just a snippet of being drawn back into this world without over doing it.

Oh! Boy! Jase and Juliette are the definition of effed up.  But someway or somehow it works for them.  Both of their darkness equates to some inner peace for them.

At the end of One Love I was hoping that Jase and Juliette would find their version of a HEA.  However, within this dark world, things don't always equate happy and easy.  These two are still on the run, and are dealing with the aftermath of all of Dornan's mind fucks.

 I am safe.
Dornan is Dead.
Jase is with me.
With the help of Elliot, Luis and Tommy these two finally start to conquer all their demons inside and out.

"Don't fight it," she whispers.
"Give me your darkness.  Give it to me, and I'll give mine to you.  I am never walking away from you."

This was a quick window back into this world, where all of the players can make peace with everything that has happened.  It's the unconventional HEA, which we expected no less for these two.  Jase and Juliette still have a long way to go, but once they finally give away all of their secrets, can they finally move forward.  It's not easy, but it's their truth.

Even though this is such a dark series, there is also so much light and hope.  Everyone needs light and for Jase and Juliette, they just plain need each other and no one else will do.  Great ending to a great dark series.

4 In the dark there is peace thumbs up!

OF MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING
A Novel
Jackie Copleton

Advance Praise for A Dictionary of Mutual Understanding:

“Perfectly paced hints and reveals...Though Amaterasu’s current life is defined by the bombing
of Nagasaki, the novel is more than just a war story...A fully drawn portrait of a city and a life,
this novel will hold appeal for history buffs, lovers of literary fiction, and readers of
high-drama romance.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Astonishingly accomplished…A gripping love story and family dynamic is woven seamlessly with graphic descriptions of the aftermath of the bomb and the historical and cultural changes sweeping Japan…While this is an often heart-breaking portrait of a mother’s love…it is also a meticulously researched history of Japan. The graceful style and clarity of [Copleton’s] writing makes this an addictive read…this novel is a must.”—Scottish Daily Mail

“Full of delicate imagery drawing on Japanese nature and culture, this is a rich, romantic story, brimming with restrained emotion—with a twist that will take your breath away. Superb.”
—Daily Mirror (UK)

“An absolute must. Gripping from the first page, you’ll not want to put it down…
this is a superb literary launch.” —Marie Claire (UK)

In the tradition of Memoirs of a Geisha and The Piano Teacher, A DICTIONARY OF MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING (A Penguin Paperback Original; On-sale: December 1, 2015; 978-0-143-12825-0; $16.00) by Jackie Copleton is a heart-wrenching debut novel set against the 1945 atomic bombing of Nagasaki, rich with intimate betrayals, family secrets, and a shocking love affair. Copleton deftly weaves a narrative spanning decades, moving seamlessly between Philadelphia forty years after World War II, Nagasaki during the war and in the years leading up to it, and the Japanese hostess bars of early 20th century Nagasaki.
When Amaterasu Takahashi opens the door of her Philadelphia home to a badly scarred man claiming to be her grandson, Hideo, she doesn’t believe him. Her grandson and her daughter, Yuko, perished nearly forty years ago during the bombing of Nagasaki. Ama is forced to confront her memories of the years before the war: of the daughter she tried too hard to protect and the love affair that would drive them apart, and even farther back, to the long, sake-pouring nights at a hostess bar where she first learned that a soft heart was a dangerous thing. She must decide whether the man calling himself Hideo is really her long-lost grandson. Once you’ve become adept at lying to others and yourself, can you still recognize the truth? Will Ama allow herself to believe in a miracle?
For many, Hiroshima and Nagasaki are distant place names learned from a history book in a sterile classroom. In A DICTIONARY OF MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING, Jackie Copleton brings to light a rarely examined era, delivering an impassioned story of family, loyalty, and love that allows readers in the Western world to confront the devastating effects of “Fat Man” on the people of Nagasaki—its human toll, and the lasting emotional and cultural impact. In the current nuclear climate this novel serves as an elegant reminder of our shameful history, but also of the vulnerability of survival and the real meaning of peace.

Blueberry Boys

by

Connor Graham is a city boy—a celebrated fashion photographer in New York. When his uncle’s death drags him back to the family blueberry farm, all he wants to do is sell it as quickly as he can. Until he meets his uncle’s tenant farmer.

Jed Jones, shy and stammering, devout and dedicated, has always yearned for land of his own and a man to share it with. Kept in the closet by his church, family, and disastrous first love, he longs to be accepted for who he is. But now, with his farm and his future in Connor’s careless hands, he stands to lose even the little he has.

Neither man expects the connection between them. Jed sees Connor—appreciates his art and passion like no one else in this godforsaken town ever has. Connor hears Jed—looks past his stutter to listen to the man inside. The time they share is idyllic, but with the farm sale pending, even their sanctuary is a source of tension. As work, family, and their town’s old-fashioned attitudes pull them apart, they must find a way to reconcile commitments to their careers and to each other.

My Blueberry Boys Review . . .

I simply adore Vanessa North!  Every book I have read so far has been heartfelt and sweet while at the same time dealing with real issues.

Connor Graham is now a city boy who's forced to come back to where he came from when his uncle dies.  The last place he wants to be is there, but he has to deal with the farm that it;s now left to him and his brother.  With this farm, comes the tenant farmer Jed Jones.  Jed is a sweet stammering man whom is forced to be living in conflict due to the inner turmoil of faith and self.  He knows he's gay, but his faith and family believe differently causing tons of conflict within himself.

"Oh for heaven's sake, Dad, it's not a lifestyle it's an orientation, an identity,"

Finally meeting up with Connor Graham the local gay legend, he starts to realize that he wants more.  He's lived in sin by lying to himself and others, but wanting Connor helps him be a bit more brave.

Connor has his own issues from the past, but there is something right about Jed.  Connor doesn't see the stuttering or his flaws, all he sees is a beautiful man.  With mutual feelings they can't stop the attraction but they know it can't go anywhere.

It started off as a fling, but they both needed each other so much more.  But how can it work with Connor needing the city and Jed needing to farm.  One will have to compromise to make it work, but it's not always that easy.

Even if they don't work out, Jed is determined to be true to himself and his family.  However, there is a long way to go to make that right, since so many are conditioned by beliefs to truly understand the truth of the reality.

"I don't know if I can make it not hurt, honey.  I want to, but that was hurtful shit."

At first his family has a hard time, but with the help of a new minister and his faith, Jed's able to make head way and be more comfortable with his own truth.  Now, all he has to do is find a way to make it work with Connor.

These two break my heart until they finally come up with a great compromise and are both able to deal with their own inner angst to gain their HEA.   It was sweet and heartfelt.  I absolutely loved Jed and Connor together.  They were perfect for one another.   Sweet MM read.

4 There's always a solution thumbs up!
