About CHARGED:

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men books comes the second installment in the Saints of Denver series featuring a bad girl and a by the book attorney who could be her salvation...or her ruin.

Avett Walker and Quaid Jackson’s worlds have no reason to collide. Ever. Quaid is a high powered criminal attorney as slick as he is handsome. Avett is a pink-haired troublemaker with a bad attitude and a history of picking the wrong men.

When Avett lands in a sea of hot water because of one terrible mistake, the only person who can get her out of it is the insanely sexy lawyer. The last thing on earth she wants to do is rely on the no-nonsense attorney who thinks of her as nothing more than a nuisance. He literally has her fate in his hands. Yet there is something about him that makes her want to convince him to loosen his tie and have a little fun…with her.

Quaid never takes on clients like the impulsive young woman with a Technicolor dye job. She could stand to learn a hard lesson or two, but something about her guileless hazel eyes intrigues him. Still, he’s determined to keep their relationship strictly business. But doing so is becoming more impossible with each day he spends with her.

As they work side-by-side, they’ll have to figure out a way to get along and keep their hands off each other—because the chemistry between them is beyond charged.

Part 2 in an a new spin off series

My Charged  Review . . .

Let's start with a shout out for Jay Crownover and yet another great book. Woot! Woot! I thought Avett was going to be hard to swallow but for the most part she was easy to love.  And even though Quaid and Avett seemed like the most unlikely duo they worked so well together.

The Saints of Denver series is a spin off series from the Marked Men series.  It isn't completely necessary to read the first series but I strongly suggest it as it will help set the tone for the Saints of Denver.

We briefly met Quaid in Built when he was trying to date Sawyer and helping out Asa in Asa from the Marked Men series.  We also got to know the negative parts of Avett from the later part of the Marked Men series and also briefly in Built.  Even though Avett was rough around the edges you knew there was a story behind her helping her to make such shit decision after shit decision.
"I gathered from the way your secretary was giving me the hairy eyeball that I'm not your typical kind of client."
From the beginning I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about Avett but she quickly grew on me with her snark and underlying soft heart.
Doing nothing was always the action that seemed to hurt the worst and, even knowing that, I still found myself doing it over and over again.
Quaid was also an unknown for me but he too quickly won my heart.  Both of these two may have superficially been from different worlds but in the end they were just two broken humans wanting to be free from their pasts.  At first these two try to fight what is right in front of them but their attraction is too large to ignore.
"I guess when you get paid to lie, making a living fooling judges and juries, you get really good at buying your own bullshit.  Thanks for your hard work, Counselor.  I'll think about you every single time I'm living up to my potential. "
Even though I truly enjoyed this story what did annoy me at times was this martyring of Avett since martyr characteristics never win me over.   Plus the 'we are over before it begins' attitude as well.  I quickly had enough of that but I was able to get past that annoyance and enjoy the rest of the book.

And maybe when I was done letting myself fall in love with him, which would inevitably lead to him breaking my heart, I would finally have hit the threshold of hurt I was willing to put myself through as punishment.

I wasn't sure if she was referring to me being in danger because of the situation surrounding Avett, or if she was talking about the way her daughter and I were bound to detonate into an explosion of heartbreak and anguish by the time we were done falling in love with one another.

I wondered if that included my heart because even though I knew this wasn't meant to be, there was a pretty big chunk of him in there already, and I didn't really want to pry him out of it.

"This is good between us, better than good, and you can't abide by it.  You've been looking for a way to twist it into something else from the inception."

Even though Avett was all doom and gloom with the future when it came to Quaid she was also growing into the woman she was always meant to be.

"I doubt he hates you. You need to give people the change to forgive you, Avett.  You screw up, but then you throw a wall and wallow in the blame, so deep and thick that you never give anyone the opportunity to tell you that yes, you made a mistake bit that's not the be-all and end-all of things."

Had I finally, after mistake upon mistake, learned that redemption was possible if you allowed yourself to be forgiven?

Making bad choices, repeatedly, hadn't made me into a bad person, but the way I handled those bad choices and let them twist into something worse had made me into a person that was desperately out of control and in need of guidance.

I loved how we got to see the growth of both of these strong characters but in different paths that lead to them together by letting go of their pasts.  I also think it was seeing it from Quaid's POV that helped me see the softness and potential of Avett.  If it wasn't for that I truly don't know if I would have liked her as much.

I was too busy formulating my counterargument and dialing in my cross-examination that I fully planned to level at her that I'd forgotten that the girl I was falling for was equal parts whirlwind and martyr.

I wanted to throttle her for being so noble and so stupid.

I flippin' loved the Marked Men series and this series so far has been just as great or maybe even a bit better.  *gasp*  I can't wait for more from this series and to find out more from Church & Dixie and Wheeler and whomever he ends up with.  Even though the Marked Men series is over it's great to get to see those characters within this series.   Another great series!

4 Opposites Attract thumbs up!
