The Ones Who Got Away by Roni Loren #bookreview #romance

The Ones Who Got Away (The Ones Who Got Away #1)

by

Liv's words cut off as Finn got closer. The man approaching was nothing like the boy she'd known. The bulky football muscles had streamlined into a harder, leaner package and the look in his deep green eyes held no trace of boyish innocence.

It's been twelve years since tragedy struck the senior class of Long Acre High School. Only a few students survived that fateful night—a group the media dubbed The Ones Who Got Away.

Liv Arias thought she'd never return to Long Acre—until a documentary brings her and the other survivors back home. Suddenly her old flame, Finn Dorsey, is closer than ever, and their attraction is still white-hot. When a searing kiss reignites their passion, Liv realizes this rough-around-the-edges cop might be exactly what she needs...

My The Ones Who Got Away Review . . .

Gah! This book I can't even imagine what these characters how did live through after the school shooting.  Even just thinking about school shooting makes my heart hurt, and the fact that it's an actual reality especially in the states breaks my heart and hurts my soul.

~ Love never ends.  But fear could.~

Having a book that focuses on the survivors is a great idea, and as usual Roni Loren did an amazing job portraying this story with a whole bunch of added sizzle as well.

Finn Dorsey and Olivia (Liv) Arias were once a thing, a hidden thing,  because they were from opposite worlds.  But they were everything to each other when they were young until the shooting changed everything.

"Meaning I'm back in town that thinks I'm a hero when I wasn't, talking to some reporter about stuff I wish I could forget, and standing here with the girl I almost got killed-and I still don't know what to say to her."

We all have our demons and sometimes we are only able to survive not thrive,  and for Liv and Finn they weren't thriving.  However, reuniting opened up so much more for these two.  Not just healing but also a second chance.

The banter between these two was great.  I loved that they brought out each others quirkiness, yet balanced it out with loads of steam.

"I know.  You can be Oddly Hot.  I'll be Weirdly Sexy.  We'll be a crime-fighting duo."

Both are trying to make something out of their tragedy but realize they have  a better chance of doing it together than separate.

"But it's two sides of the same coin.  You don't get to have only one side or the other.  You have to put the whole thing in your pocket and take both, or you get nothing at all.  I don't want to live with empty pockets anymore."

Roni Loren is one of my favorite authors and here again she has done it with a start to another great series.

Can't wait for more from this series, where we get to find out more from Kincaid, Rebecca and Taryn.

4 It's time to live thumbs ups!

“Cry Baby is brilliantly written. It's hauntingly beautiful and heartbreaking and will leave you thinking about it for days afterward. Bravo, Ms. Scott. This boy-man stole my heart and I don't want it back.”- L.J. Shen, Bestselling Author

Blurb:
Tristan Lopez is loyal to his brothers. He doesn’t really have a choice, born into a gang that has a chokehold on every kid that roams its streets. He gave his life to them willingly, knowing if he did then one day this kingdom, led by boys drunk with power and ruled by fear, would all be his.

He was loyal through it all. Loyal when prison took his dad away. Loyal when his face was touched by the cold metal of the rival gang’s gun. Loyal even though his mom begged him to run the moment she returned home from rehab.

He thought about becoming someone else. It was hard not to crave the life of a regular 17-year-old. It’s the only reason he stayed in school—to pretend. But he always fell back in line.

Loyal.

Riley Rojas didn’t belong in Tristan’s real world. She should have only been part of the fantasy, one of the many faces he got to pretend with amidst rows of metal chairs and desks and whiteboards with assignments. But there she was, moving boxes from the back of an old pick-up into a house Tristan had shot up on a dare with his friends only a few months before.

Tall enough to look him in the eyes and strong enough to fill his shadow, Riley took up space on his streets, her loud mouth fearless in the face of the gang leaders who terrified everyone else. She pushed Tristan around on the hard court, and she balled better than his friends—better than him

sometimes. She challenged him. She needed him. He liked it. And when her pale blue eyes stared into his, he quit wanting to pretend.

He couldn’t ask her to leave because she’d only dig her heels in deeper. He couldn’t ask because he didn’t want her to go. She was blurring his lines. She was testing his loyalty.

He was falling in love.

And it was going to tear him apart.

My Cry Baby Review . . .

Normally I adore anything by Ginger Scott, and don't get me wrong I did quite like this one a lot as well, but this is the first time it took me awhile to get enraptured by the story.  However, the slow build up is also needed to build the foundation of this gang lifestyle, especially since most reading the story will be ignorant in this way of living.  Once the foundation was set then the story picked up and I was able to get lost in the story and the characters as I usually do with Ginger Scott..

Tristan was born into a life and now is torn because he wants more than that life, but to get out of that life is basically impossible.

As Tristan's getting pulled more into the life he meets Riley who is the epitomy of hope and future. But he knows he can't have that and the last thing he wants is for anyone to know he has a weakness and wants more.

But that doesn't stop Tristan from wanting more and being attracted to Riley.

Riley has had to fight for everything in life and she's still fighting.   And meeting Tristan just gives her more to fight for.

Ginger has such a great way at making you feel everything that is going on within her stories.

I was rooting for Tristan and Riley the whole way and didn't see any hope possible for these two and then a sliver of light was let through causing the barest of chances for a future and I loved it.

3.75 There is always hope thumbs up!

A New Englander at heart, she now lives in Sarasota, Florida with her husband and their two dogs who subsequently have been characters in her books. My Contracted Review . . .

I honestly wasn't sure how this book was going to play out since we already saw Max and Eve together in Signed and Endorsed.  However, Marni was able to carve out another delicious story taming another player.

Eve and Max have a good relationship and she was content until her best friend James made her realize she wants more.  However, Max has done more and doesn't want to rock a good thing with his status quo with Eve.

The more Eve realized she wanted more, the more Max lets her down causing her to have to let go.   With Max he doesn't always get it right away, but once he figures it out he goes whole hog to fix things.

I adored Eve and Max together and the element of suspense was given with Max's other relationships and how he perceived relationships.

Now that we have seen all the men of the agency fall in love, I'm foaming at the bit for Scarlett's story.  With her we have seen very little about her except being a kick ass business woman.  Hopefully we get to see Scarlett also be a kickass heroine as well.  And happily with the new merger we may be getting more from this series with new characters.  Fingers Crossed.

I absolutely adore Marni Mann and her ability to tell stories.  She goes from dark to light.  From steamy to sweet.  And everything in between.  She always keeps us guessing and helps us fall in love over and over again.

3.5 Time to man up thumbs up!
