My Black Lies Review ...

This book was dark, twisted and brilliant.

After reading the synopsis which I found had a similar feel to Sex Love and Repeat, I thought were going to get Sex Love and Repeat v2.  However, that was so NOT the case.  What we got was nail biting, what the hell is going, OMG I so did not see that coming.  Sometimes when I'm not sure what is going on I jump to the end to see what I am working towards, (I know, I know, but I can't help it) but even after I did this I didn't have a hot clue. I had a suspicion but nothing concrete.

Alessandra Torre leans to the darker side of writing, which is a nice reprieve from the happy go lucky contemporary romance.  With her stories you never really know what you are going to get.  So far, with the books that I have read from her are a form of brilliant.

Black Lies is a book that needs to be experienced.  You can't really summarize and review it without giving spoilers, just know that it is going to blow your mind in one way or another.  I was hooked from the first word to the very last.  It is not your typical love story, but a love story is what it was.  I highly recommend this book!

Excerpt:
“You sure Evan doesn’t mind me being here?”
“He probably hates that you’re staying the night, but he’ll get over it.” I take a step toward him and pat him on the shoulder, marveling at the solid feel of muscle beneath my palm, beneath the thick fabric of his sweatshirt. Has he gotten taller since the last time I saw him? Broader? He’s so big, standing next to him makes me feel small. “Do you need anything else?” I remove my hand from his shoulder, wishing I could touch him more.
“Nah. I’m gonna change, brush my teeth and go to sleep.” He smiles, looking cute, like a little boy and my heart flutters. When he reaches for the hem of his sweatshirt I step away, watch in silent fascination as he pulls the fabric over his head, taking the T-shirt he’s wearing beneath it upward so I catch a glimpse of his flat, perfect stomach, the little trail of dark hair that starts just under his navel.
I’m breathless, my skin is tingling and when he tosses the sweatshirt onto the couch, I start to walk backwards. “Okay well, good night.” I need to get away from him before I do something really stupid.
Like jump him.
“Night, Reverie,” he calls after me as I hurry to my bedroom. Glancing over my shoulder, I find him watching me with that penetrating, thoughtful gaze and I turn away, practically tripping over my feet in the hall. I rush into my room, shutting the door quietly before I slump against it, closing my eyes and pressing my forehead against the rough wood.
My feelings for him haven’t stopped. I still want him. I’m still in love with him. So why am I denying myself from being with him? Because I’ve changed and I’m worried he won’t accept me for who I really am? And because my life is so crazy the last thing I need is another complication to muck it all up?
Valid reasons, but why would I deprive myself from being with him? He’s the only one who understood me. Who listened to me. Who cared about me.
I think he still does.
Cracking open my eyes, I push away from the doorway and shut off the light before I crawl into bed. I lay there in the dark, listening to him move about inside the bathroom, which is right next to my bedroom. He finishes brushing his teeth before he exits the room and I swear I can feel him standing on the other side of my closed door, waiting. Listening for any sign of life coming from within.
I can’t move. I’m frozen, holding my breath, waiting for him to knock on the door, to turn the knob, anything to show that he wants to see me. I want him to both respect my brother’s wishes and defy them. I want him overcome with need yet cautious. I want…everything.
All of him.
Disappointment crashes through me when I realize he is definitely obeying Evan’s wishes. He doesn’t sneak into my room, doesn’t attempt to talk to me, nothing. I should be happy. Pleased that he doesn’t want to upset anyone.
Instead, I’m sad.
Rolling over on my side, I punch the pillow beneath my head and settle in for the night, willing myself to fall asleep. I get to spend pretty much the entire weekend with him. Maybe we can work it out then since we’ll have plenty of time. But for now I’ll have to settle for Nick visiting me…
Only in my dreams.

About HER DESTINY:
I knew from the moment I first saw him he was the one. The only boy I could ever want.
The only boy I could ever love.
They say he’s bad for me.
But I know he’s not.
Until the day he rejects me.
And breaks my heart.
Completely.
Everything changes in the blink of an eye. My entire life as I’ve known it is…gone. Secrets are revealed. Promises once made are irrevocably broken. There’s no way my family can get back to what we once were.
So when Nicholas Fairfield walks back into my life like he never left it, I’m furious. Thrilled. Irritated. Excited.
Conflicted.
Despite my confusion, I want to be with him. I love him. But danger lurks where we least expect it. Someone will do whatever it takes to tear us apart. All I know is: I won’t let them.
Because Nick Fairfield? He’s mine.

My Her Destiny Review...

Since I was left with the cliffhanger from His Reverie I had to read this book to find out what happens.  As I begun reading I was hoping that I was going to start to like Reverie's character more than the last book but sadly no, that was not the case.  In reality I started to like her even less.  For Reverie she was a bit sheltered from the world and Nick was really her first experience of the outside world.

Because of this naivety when she gets the bitch slap of her reality she really doesn't handle it well.  Instead of being the strong girl she had potential to be, she throws her friends away and becomes friends with the 'mean girls' or class tramps.  While Rev is spiraling out of control with her family drama, her broken heart for Nick is still there.  If it wasn't for her brother Evan I don't know what would have happened to her.  With their recent reality, Evan steps up to the plate and takes care of Rev.

At this point even though I wasn't digging Rev, I still got her and what was going on.  However, the moment Nick comes back in the scene is where I got really confused.  Until this point she has been missing Nick, then he shows up and she is all 'nope, not going to happen. I've changed' blah, blah blah and does a complete 180º where it comes to Nick.

Nick has never stopped loving or thinking about Rev but he is just as confused with Rev as I am at this point.
I need her to stop contradicting herself.
This is what I realized that bugs me about her, is all her contradictions.  She is so wishy washy that it is hard to really warm up to her. They have both had many road blocks in life and some worse than others but Nick handles them with a maturity beyond his age where Rev's immaturity hinders her which causes a divide for me with the depth of their emotions towards one another.

Even though Rev was not winning my heart. I did like the story and especially Nick.  I think if I was younger like 20 years younger I totally be cool with Rev and have more empathy with her.  Most of the times when I read YA/NA type books I can lost in them and don't feel like I am way to old to read them but this one I felt like it really is geared to a younger audience.

Skin to Skin (Skin Deep #3) by J.M. Stone - #bookreview

Skin to Skin (Skin Deep #3)

by

“I kissed Brandon.”

Three little words. One drunken night. And everything changed.

Starting over is never easy to do, and Chloe made it that much harder on herself when she lip-locked Brandon. Guilt-ridden, she confesses to Allie about the kiss. Instead of the black eye she figured was coming, she gets way more than she bargained for in the form of an Allie-sized reality check…but she still can’t shake the haunting memory of a certain toe-curling, leave-you-breathless, wet-your-panties kiss.

With Brandon and Chloe walking on egg-shells around each other, fate, this time in the form of two scheming, hormonal, pregnant women and three funny furballs, steps in once more, forcing them to face the fact that things have definitely changed between them…

But is it for better or worse?

*Recommended for readers 18+ due to HOT sexual encounters, adult situations, and language.

**This is book three of the Skin Deep Series; recommended to read after Skin Deep, book one of the series, and Under My Skin, book two of the series

Part three in the series and recommended to be read as a series in full

My Skin to Skin Review ...

I started to read this book, then I put it on hold for a bit because I wasn't sold on Brandon and Chloe together.  At the end of Under My Skin I didn't like how Brandon ended things with Allie and Jackson.  So, now Brandon and Chloe, hmmmmmmmm, I wasn't sure but I owed it to them to give them another try.  As I started to read it again I remembered why I adore J.M. Stone and this series.

In Skin to Skin we get to truly find out why Brandon left a relationship he fought so hard for.  With Brandon he wanted the big love story like Luke and Emma and he didn't have that with Allie. Yes he loved her but he wanted more, that he wouldn't get from her and Jackson because they had bigger connection than him and Allie.

Chloe has always been his best friend's little sister but one drunken kiss has made him change the way he sees Chloe.

As Brandon wades through his new feelings for Chloe he starts to be hot and cold with her, which causes her to run.  As Brandon realizes what his indecisiveness is causing he finally commits to the idea of him and Chloe and goes all in.

I like books that focus more on the external angst instead of the whole book being focused around the internal relationship angst.  J.M Stone is great at having a nice balance of relationship angst but really the story is focused on all the outside issues.  For Brandon and Chloe the issues are Chloe's asshole of an ex and as well as with a bit of anxiety from Allie.  Allie's issues bugged me a bit because it felt like she wanted her cake and eat it too.  She has a new family and with Brandon and Chloe she can still have the companionship of Brandon just not the intimacy.  So win win for all really.

As the issues with Chloe's ex escalates she realizes the support system she has come into with her new family and friends.  I did like Brandon and Chloe but there was just something that I can't put my finger on of why I didn't love them.  I don't know if it was that there relationship went from friends to really new to hot and cold to full steam ahead.

I did like this book and loved the antics between all of them. But at times I wanted more dialogue then the internal play by play monologue that felt a bit too much in this book.  This book, like the others had a nice balance of humor, drama, angst, steam and love. I can't wait to find out more with this series with what happens with Leah and Ian as well as Calland and ????.

EXCERPT

A throaty laugh made him pause.
He knew that laugh.
The smile on his face suddenly felt more genuine. His gaze slid across the room when she laughed again. Her back was to him, but it was her…Utah. She held her cue stick and pointed at a corner pocket. “Watch ‘em and weep.”
She sunk the eight ball like it was her bitch and the guys around the table groaned. A short-haired blonde lifted her hand and made a grabby motion with her fingers. “Pay up!”
Utah laughed, laid her cue on the table, and grabbed the bottle of beer at her side. All the while Rick just watched the interplay. She wore tight jeans, a tucked in tank that hugged her waist in a mouth-watering way …over the ensemble was a jean jacket that he could easily picture draped over the handlebars of his motorcycle.
“I think we just got hustled,” one of the young college kids said as he shoved his hands in his wallet to pay his debt.
“I tried to warn you.”
Judy’s friend shoved the bills into her pocket faster than the waitress had. “Anyone else? Twenty buck minimum with a round of drinks.”
This might be fun.
Rick took a step forward and lifted his voice above the crowd. “A hundred bucks.”
Utah froze, but didn’t turn around. He wondered if she recognized his voice. Had she thought about him in the last year? With the exception of her brother’s divorce party, he hadn’t seen her…not outside of a wet dream or two.
The blonde swiveled her head like a snake to prey and her eyes did that sweeping thing that happened to him once in a while. Rick knew he wasn’t hard on the eyes, knew he filled out his shirt like a Marine should. His thick shoulders and neck screamed military or linebacker. He did play a little football in high school.
“Who the hell are you?” the blonde mumbled.
Rick chuckled.
Judy slowly turned and had to tilt her head back to look at him. “Green Eyes.”
“Hey, Utah.”
“You know this guy?” The blonde shoved next to Judy and nudged her arm.
God, she was even more adorable than he remembered. He didn’t let her eyes go, just matched her stare. A blush rose to her cheeks and a few freckles peeked through. Her snarky remark about his presence was a heartbeat away. He’d lay another hundred bucks on the table as a bet that the next words out of her mouth would shock everyone within earshot.
“Did the steroid train stop in town when I wasn’t looking?”
The blonde started to laugh.
Rick stepped even closer so barely an inch separated them. The smile never left his face. “I hear steroids shrink dicks.”
As if she couldn’t help herself, Judy glanced down and it was Rick’s turn to laugh. He brushed the edge of her body with his and removed the cue from the table. “What do ya say, Utah? I’ll even let you break. Ladies first and all that.”
Rick knew they were drawing a crowd, but the interplay between them matched the sparks that hovered over them like a damn rainbow, and he was powerless to care what anyone thought.
“A hundred bucks is steep, Judy.”
“S’okay, Meg…Rick’s a big talker. Besides, he doesn’t know what I’m capable of.”
Rick shook his head and clicked his tongue. “Now, now…don’t want to show all your cards.”
“She’s really good, dude,” the guy she’d relieved of twenty bucks said from across the table.
Rick lowered his voice. “Will you go easy on me, Babe?”
Judy regained some of her lost composure and pushed away from his personal space. “Not on your life. And I’m not your babe!”
We’ll see about that. He couldn’t stop smiling.

My Taken by Tuesday Review ...

Catherine Bybee knows how to write a good story.  I love this series.  All of them can be read as standalone, but for this one to really get how Rick and Judy have a deep connection and depth of their characters I recommend at least reading Fiance by Friday and Single by Saturday first. However, really reading the whole series is even better. ;)

Rick is a ex marine who is loyal to a fault but is always smiling.  Judy is sisters to Hollywood's royalty but sweet to the core.   During Single by Saturday they team up to help Karen (Judy's Sister in law) but what they didn't expect was for that chemistry to not be forgotten.

It has been a year since Rick saw Judy but he did NOT forget her.  As Judy graduates and moves to L.A. Rick finally tries to win Judy's heart.  Judy knows that Rick will be her kryptonite to her heart, so she tries to push him away so she can focus on her future and career, but Rick wants more so he bulldozes his way in there.  Once Rick gets the break he needs to win over Judy tragedy hits and causes him to almost lose her.

This group of people just can't stay out of danger.  As Judy's life is in danger so is her heart.  The only way to protect Rick during this drama is to marry him but is it only temporary????

Rick may marry her on paper but for him he is all in, now he just has to convince Judy while keeping her alive.

As with all the books in this series, it is jammed pack full of love, family, friendship, loyalty and suspense.  I adored Judy and Rick together and let me tell you Rick can smile at me anytime. Great book, Great Series!!

Part 3 in a series but could be read as a standalone

 My Ricochet Review ...

So I am a fan of the Renegades books and I was digging Ryker and all his demons. However, Rachel had some kick ass moments but something about the book just didn't reel me in until the last 30%.  But as I read and got to the pivotal point of angst and heart break I felt like I was let down after it . When this happens it's like thinking about going on the largest roller coaster and once you are on the ride you find out it is only a kiddie roller coaster and you are disappointed. Everything is leading up to this point and then BAM all is well and wrapped up to quickly and clean for my liking.

Nathan Ryker is a broken man suffering from PTSD.  He decides to help out his best friend by consulting on a stunt.  When he arrives he meets a girl who can help drown his demons, even though he knows who she is he takes the risk because he doesn't think he will see her again.

The following day Ryker wakes up to an empty bed but moves forward to help his buddy only to have his one night stand be front and center to his new job.

Rachel has been burned so she tries to have a meaningless one night stand to only have him thrown into her everyday world where she doesn't ever mix business and pleasure.  Even though Ryker has his demons Rachel can't seem to stay away.  Ryker knows he wants Rachel but he has a lot of baggage to sift through if he is going to make it work.

I did like the book but it had its high's and low's for me. Ryker was the high but Rachel was one of my lows, she had moments but I wanted a bit more from her and this story.
