Book Description:
WHY CAN’T I BE YOU
takes its name from a 1987 hit song from English rock band The Cure. All her life, Jenny Shaw toed the line, striving to be
the perfect colleague, girlfriend, and daughter – a path that has led her to an
unhappy (though successful) career, a failed relationship, and all-but-severed
family ties. On her way to the airport for her first business trip, she
is unceremoniously dumped by the man she thought she would one day marry.
In her haze of shock and confusion, she responds to the wrong name when Myra
Aberly, organizer of Seattle ’s Mt. Si class of 1999’s thirteenth high-school
reunion, shouts “Jessie!” across the hotel lobby.
In
an instant, Jenny Shaw becomes Jessie Morgan, a woman to whom she bears an
uncanny resemblance. She is immediately embraced by Jessie’s warm circle of
friends – and gains a possible love interest. But when Jenny
becomes more and more curious about Jessie’s history, she uncovers a trail of
secrets, pain and deceit that inspires her to uncover the truth that will heal
her own painful past.
My Review...
I am still a bit speechless about this book. I really liked it and it was very different in the realm of contemporary fiction these days. I loved the premise of this book and I liked the characters and I was blown away that the pretense or notion of the book could carry on for so long without people finding out the truth.
Because the facade went on for so long and Jenny was lying to everyone it was hard to fully get enveloped with her character because she basically lies for like 85% of the book. It was hard because even she didn't know who she was anymore. Not getting lost in Jenny was not a bad thing because her loss of her self or I guess her journey to find herself is the reason she chose this mess to begin with.
In the end it was about putting yourself first and choosing what's right for you and not what others think and no matter how many times we want our loved ones to appreciate us when we are from broken places we have to let go and realize that those are the issues of others and are not our own issues.
This book is also about loss, friendship, love, hope and second chances.
Great book!
4 Thumbs up!
