Never start a fire you can't control...
Connor Bannon is supposed to be dead. Dishonorably discharged from the Navy SEALs, he's spent the last two years working as a street enforcer in Brooklyn for his cousin's crime ring. Through a twist of fate, he's now in Chicago, working undercover to bust criminals. But when a cute little arsonist joins the team-all combat boots, tiny jean shorts, and hot-pink hair-Connor's notorious iron control slips.
Erin "she's getting away" O'Dea knows two things. She hates authority. And... Nope, that's it. When she's forced to operate on the "right" side of the law, her fear of being confined and controlled blazes to the surface. The last thing she expects is a control freak like Connor to soothe her when she needs it most. Worse, something behind the sexy ex-soldier's eyes ignites a dangerous inferno of desire. One that invites Erin to play with fire. And one that could get them both killed...

Excerpt #1
As if her thoughts had made him appear, Connor strode into the courthouse. Her pulse started beating double time, her stomach muscles tightening. Good Lord, the man was a fucking panty dropper. She’d only been away from him for a few hours and it felt like years since she’d experienced his presence. In jeans and a fitted gray T-shirt that molded to his muscles like her hands itched to do, he personified confidence and authority. Hot, rugged male. His gaze connected with hers immediately and darkened. She thought back to that morning when he’d dressed in the early morning light, his abs flexing as he pulled the shirt over his head. His erection barely contained by his boxers. She’d never been one to beg for anything, but she’d been seconds from offering him her mouth. Pleading for the privilege of sucking him off.
Conner shook his head at her with a sexy half smile on his face, as if he could read her thoughts across the room. He stopped at the metal detector and walked through after the security guard beckoned him forward. When the woman grabbed her wand and instructed him to raise his hands in the air, something ugly reared its head deep inside her. The detector hadn’t even beeped. There was no reason for the personal service. When the woman smiled at Connor and ran a hand down her ponytail, Erin propelled herself forward, boots echoing on the polished marble.
Erin hissed as she drew even with the guard. “If you’re done feeling up my boyfriend, I’d love a turn. We were in a rush this morning.”
The guard dropped the wand, letting it dangle near her thigh. “Did you just hiss at me?”
Erin hissed again.
“Okay.” Connor stepped between them, winking down at her. “We should go. Don’t want to keep the clerk waiting.”
Appreciation spread in her belly like honey. He hadn’t chided her for her behavior or apologized to the woman on her behalf. Instead he’d given the impression they were on their way to get married, appeasing her jealousy in one fell swoop. “That’s right.” She sauntered toward the elevator. “There’s vows to be exchanged. Rings to put on fingers. Shit like that.”
She glanced behind her to find Connor staring at her ass as she walked, so she put a little swing in her hips and savored his groan. Damn. She’d definitely never had this much fun at a courthouse.
A moment later, she and Connor stepped into an empty elevator. She hit the button for the top floor even though the clerk was on the first, and leaned back against the wall, looking up at him through her eyelashes. “How was your morning, baby? Was it worth leaving me in bed, all hot and bothered for you?”
“Fuck no, it wasn’t.” He crooked a big finger at her. “Climb on up here.”

Thank you for your interest in my books! I'm Tessa and I live in the crazy, loud, overcrowded borough of Brooklyn, New York. I love it here. This city is a constant source of inspiration, which is why I've decided to set my most recent books in the Line of Duty Series here.

I moved to New York when I was eighteen, the day after I graduated high school. Threw my suitcase in the back of a Chevrolet Cavalier and drove across the country to find my adventure. I'm still finding it, little by little.Thank you for being a part of it.

My Up in Smoke Review ...

The series is a spin off from the Line of Duty series.  Actually its a spin off from His Risk to Take from within that series.  This series begins with a prequel as a jump off to this series with Ruby, Troy and Bowen.  Then book one is about Bowen and Sera.  These two books is what is truly setting the stage for this series.  Where a group of criminals is set up to help the Chicago PD fight crime.  Under the order of Derek Tyler from Protecting What's His.

This little criminal group is quite the band of misfits.  We first meet Connor in Risking it All.  We know that he has a story behind him but we aren't quite sure what it is.  In Up in Smoke we get to see what makes Connor tick at the same time watch love at first site happen with two unlikely people.

Erin's a wild card.  She's hot and cold with so much energy.  But that is a front for what truly lurks beneath the surface.  Connor right away feels protective of her and understands more about why Bowen's so crazy when it comes to Sera.

Connor likes control, where as Erin fears any restraint or lack of control.  How are these two going to find a happy medium?

Erin has her reasons for why she can't be touched but there is something about Connor that makes her feel safe.  This group may have started on the wrong end of the law but their pasts are making them very valuable assets.

Connor's strength and control are what Erin needs to feel right again.  While at the same time Erin is what helps soothe Connor's demons.

This book had suspense, dirty talking men, love at first sight, intrigue and lots of heart.  Great couple. Great story.  Great Book. Great Author.  Great series.  I can't wait for more from this series and Tessa Bailey.

My Book Boyfriend Monday ~ Carson 'Joker' Steele #MC #bookbf @KristenAshley68

Oh! Boy! It has been quite awhile since I found myself a book boyfriend.  Thankfully I have completely fell in love again and found one worthy of My Book Boyfriend Status .  The honors this week go to Carson 'Joker' Steel of the Chaos MC from Ride Steady by Kristen Ashley

How did Joker win my heart?  It's easy ...

  1. He's a survivor
  2. Even though he had a bad upbringing he still learned to love.  And love did he do.
  3. He's a brother.  Which makes him loyal.  And loyal he is.  To his brothers, his friends, his pseudo family and of course Carissa & Travis

Some of the reasons I love Joker :

Ride Steady (Chaos #3)

by

The ride of her life . . . Once upon a time, Carissa Teodoro believed in happy endings. Money, marriage, motherhood: everything came easy---until she woke up to the ugly truth about her Prince Charming. Now a struggling, single mom and stranded by a flat tire, Carissa's pondering her mistakes when a vaguely familiar knight rides to her rescue on a ton of horsepower.

Climb on and hold tight . . .
In high school, Carson Steele was a bad boy loner who put Carissa on a pedestal where she stayed far beyond his reach. Today, he's the hard-bodied biker known only as Joker, and from the way Carissa's acting, it's clear she's falling fast. While catching her is irresistible, knowing what to do with her is a different story. A good girl like Carissa is the least likely fit with the Chaos Motorcycle Club. Too bad holding back is so damned hard. Now, as Joker's secrets are revealed and an outside threat endangers the club, Joker must decide whether to ride steady with Carissa---or ride away forever . . .

My Ride Steady Review ...

It has been so long since I have completely LOVED a book.  And of course it was another Kristen Ashley book which I'm not surprised, as she's ALWAYS my go to author when I want something more from a book.  I always know what I'm going to expect from her books, and she rarely disappoints me.  She has a gift a writing amazing bad ass alpha men with minimal dialogue, but oh boy when the do speak its always a doozie that warms your heart.  Well sometimes they have asshole moments but that always ends up being part of their charm.  Not only do we get amazing men but we also get kick ass females who are strong.  They aren't weak and whiny. (Thank god!)  And with this series we also get the MC which takes it up another notch in my world, as I'm a complete sucker for that genre.  There's just something about that dark gritty MC world and the women that tame them or help balance their dark with light.

Carson Steele has had a shit life but has always loved Carissa Teodoro.  Even though throughout high school she didn't know he even existed.

Carissa Teodoro may have been in a relationship and had 'friends' but she always wanted more.  She had always crushed on Carson Steele but was sad that he never noticed her.  She too has had a tough past with the loss of her mother and sister but she's has always dreamed of something bigger.

After a brief interlude before graduation they have a moment with hope of something more .
"Okay, Carson,"  she said softly, "Go after you beautiful Life."
Now 7 years later and both of them didn't get their HEA.  Carissa's steal reeling after her nasty divorce but the only thing that matters to her, is her son Travis.   While Carson's now 'Joker' and for the first time feels like he has a family with his MC brothers of Chaos.  Joker loves this new life but hasn't taken advantage of all there is being a part of Chaos.

Carissa is down on her luck on the side of the road until a gorgeous biker steps up to help her.   Not only is he good with cars, he's good with her son.  This biker however seems familiar to her but she can't figure out why.   Joker knew the minute he pulled over that it was Carissa that he was helping out.  But since she didn't recognize him, he chose not to tell her the truth.
" . . . Thought you had secrets.  Way you're holdin' back with this girl, think I'm wrong.  You don't have secrets.  You got demons."

Now that Carissa is free in clear and drawn to Joker, she makes it known that she wants more.  However, she keeps coming up to a brick wall that is Joker.   Thankfully all that are Chaos and everyone associated with them also see the goodness in Carissa and the potential of what could be with Joker.  So they take her and Travis under their wings and make them part of their family.  Until Joker gets his head out of his ass and claims what is rightly his.  His past made him think he doesn't deserve someone like Carissa and Travis.  Thankfully there were good moments of his past that are now becoming part of his present, making him realize that he's so much more worth then he ever realized.   With this new found feelings he finally gives in to Carissa and makes his play.

"Figure your father didn't give you this so I will.  A man is defined many ways.  One of those is the woman he picks to be at his side."

I absolutely loved Joker and Carissa together.  They were perfect.  They were a complete balance to each other with all their strengths and weaknesses.  Now add Tack, Cherry, Tab, Shy, Lanie, Hop, the rest of Chaos,  some of the Nightingales, Mitch, Brock, Hawk and more and we get a perfect KA experience.

I LOVED this book.  The only nitpick I have is that Carissa didn't recognize Joker for such a long time.  Sure I get her reasons of why, but everyone else recognized him and yet she was the only one who had a crush on him for years, so if you think anyone would recognize him it would be her.  Other than that it was amazing and exactly what I needed.  Lately, since I read so much I'm getting bored and frustrated with same recurring theme occurring in the romance genre.  So when an author can break that mold I'm freakin' thrilled.

"No, you feel it, you share it.  Don't hold back with me, Butterfly."  That was good advice.  Good advice for a relationship two people were building. (Phew! Good advice Joker. We almost had another heroine not communicate and assume again. )

As with all KA books we know that Joker and Carissa aren't going to have an easy ride but they have a beautiful one.  As Joker starts to become more human again, we fall deeper and deeper in love with him.  We knew there was something hidden within him but what comes out was pure joy the way he grows and becomes the man he has always wanted to be.  With the help of his new family, Chaos, Carissa and Travis he becomes the one thing he never thought was possible ... happy.

" . . . But I know this and you gotta know it too:  No matter what happens, I will never, not ever, not fuckin' ever, Carissa, regret riding down that shoulder to help you and your boy.  It's the best decision I ever made in my life, and I know that in a way I know I'll feel that until the day I fuckin' die."

Loved it!  I absolutely love this series and all things KA.  I can't wait for more from this series and anything KA.

“How did you fall?” he asked.
“Backward. Fast,” she quipped, not about to admit she’d been startled by a bunny. A baby bunny.
“Smartass.” He began to check her over. As in he put his hands all over her and ran them over her body. “You’re bleeding,” he said.
“I’ll buy you new sheets.”
“Shut up.” He frowned at her wrist and found another problem at her ankle, all while she attempted to keep her T-shirt covering as much as of her as possible.
Then he pointed to her shirt. “Lose it.”
“Bite me.”
“Later,” he said. “I want to see your ribs.”
“How about my foot up your ass?”
He met her gaze, his own stubborn and unbending. “Me or a doctor, Lily.”
He’d do it too, she had no doubt. He’d drag her kicking and screaming out of here if need be. So she sighed and very carefully lifted the T-shirt to just beneath her breasts. “See? I’m fine—”
She broke off, the air backing up in her lungs when he ran his hands very lightly over her ribcage, stopping when she managed to suck in a breath.
“Bruised, not broken I don’t think,” he said, his voice quiet and calm and clinically dispassionate, in direct opposition to his eyes. “Turn over.”
She bit out a harsh laugh. “Yeah, that’s going to happen nev—”
He rolled her over and pinned her there with a hand low on her back.
She sputtered and fought him, but then went utterly still when he ran his fingers up the back of one thigh, scooping the edge of her boy cut panties up a cheek.
“Also bruised,” he said.
“That’s where I landed. No worries, I’m padded nicely.”
“Nicely is right,” he said, and he removed his hands from her.
She leapt off the bed, tugged down her shirt, and had to tighten her lips not to whimper at the fast movement. “Okay, thanks. Be sure to lock the door on your way—”
“Did you hit your head or lose consciousness at any time?”
“No!” She didn’t want to need his help, wanted to lick her wounds in private rather than get turned on by his gentle touch. But she was stupid light-headed from getting up too fast and knew she wasn’t in the greatest shape.
And must as she didn’t want to like it, she did like how he always seemed to be there for her, even if her brain kept telling her heart she didn’t want him to be.
He still wasn’t leaving. “Tell me what really happened.”
“I loaded up some wood and was making my way up the stairs when”—she broke off and grimaced —“something popped out of the wood. I nearly had heart failure and fell down the stairs. The end.”
He never took his eyes off of her. “What popped out at you?”
“A spider,” she said, because hey, that could’ve totally happened. Just because she’d freaked out over the baby bunny didn’t mean that there wasn’t also a spider. Maybe she’d been so busy falling down the stairs she just hadn’t seen the spider.
“A spider made you fall down the stairs?” he asked in disbelief.
“A big one.” She lifted her hands so that they were about a foot apart.
His lips twitched.
Her hands spread apart even wider. “It might have been a mutant spider.”
“Or a baby bunny,” he said.
She stared at him while he grinned wide.
“You knew the whole time,” she accused.
“Yep. Lenny told me.”
“Well isn’t that just like a man,” she said in disgust.
Aidan tipped his head back and laughed out loud.
“Fine. Whatever,” she said. “I’m taking a shower. Alone.”
“Make it lukewarm, not hot,” he said. “I’m going to the truck for my first aid kit.”
“Aidan, I’m so not in the mood to play doctor.”
“Good,” he said. “I’ll play doctor and you play the nice, sweet, passive patient.”

My Second Chance Summer Review ...

I have only read one Jill Shalvis short story as part of an anthology before this  (insert gasp), so after hearing and reading such great things about her and her writing I jumped at this chance to read this book.

Aidan Kincaid is a bit of a player but he has tons of heart.  He's a firefighter, rescuer, and loyal.  He once loved but she left without an explanation ten years ago.

Even though he's content in his life it all changes once Lily Danville steps back into Cedar Ridge.  Lily is always running. Running from her past.  Running from her present.  Running from her guilt.  Running from everything.  But after another bad choice she has to return home with her tail between her legs.

Fate has brought these two back together but Lily is determined to keep them apart.

I have to admit I was a bit grump going into this book as I was looking for a book to get me out of it.  I thought this could be the ticket as it was a fun read with heart, sweetness, humor and love but it unfortunately had a heroine who annoyed me, so instead of taking me out of my grumpy mood it made me a bit worse.  Which sucked because it was fun read, but Lily did NOT win me over at all.

~The past belongs in the past, the past belongs in the past ... ~  (if only Lily actually lived by that mantra)

~Because once upon a time you wanted him and he ... wanted your sister. ~ (Why?  Why must heroines always assume without actually talking to the person involved.  Why?)

"He doesn't like me like that,"  (No he just kisses everyone he doesn't like. *insert eye roll here*)

"Tell me you didn't leave and then not talk to me for ten years because you thought I had something going on with your sister."  (No that would be stupid.  Of course she did. Argh! )

"This is my battle to fight," she said.  "Alone."  (Argh! )

~ But though she could forgive, she couldn't quite forget.  Not this. ~ (For fuck sakes. LET IT GO already)

"Let me get this straight.  I have a question, I come to you, you get pissed about it and you what, just walk away?  Is that it?  Is that how this is going to work, Lily?" (Sadly yes with Lily this is her way of things.)
"Well, I'm not an expert on the good guys, "  she said.  "But I am somewhat of an expert on the rotten ones. And they never ask.  They tell, or worse yet, they don't ever call or text.  They take what they want and then they vanish.  No talking at all.  Seems to me if Aidan was asking, that's better than nothing, right?  Maybe he wanted to make sure.  Or maybe he just wanted to hear how you reel about him.  I mean, I know we think we're obvious with our feelings, but we're not."  (Good advice maybe Lily could get her head out of her ass to see this)

Aidan had never made it a secret how he felt for her.  He'd been open and frank. Always.  And in return she'd . . . been neither of those things.    . . .  "It's me,"  Lily said, turning to look at Jonathan.  "It's all me,"  (Yes it is you Lily.  Argh!)

Here's the thing that sucks for me.  Lily ruined this story for me. As for the rest of the characters, I loved them.
"Now I know that you and your brother are so full of poo your eyes are brown, so you listen up good.  If you screw this night up for me, I'm going to put an ad in the paper saying you're ready to get married and have kids and that all singles should apply.  Especially the criers, the stage-five clingers, and the poetry lovers."

Did I love the writing style?  Yes.  It had charm and humor.   Did I like Aidan?  Hell Yes!  He had heart and wore it on his sleeve even though he was stubborn as an ox.  Will I read another Jill Shalvis book? Definitely.  Just because I didn't like this heroine doesn't mean I won't like other books.  If it was only the writing style and the majority of the other characters I would have given this book a 4, but Lily dragged it down to a 3.  As I'm not a fan at all at whiny females who are stubborn and assume, assume and assume which leads to miscommunications and unnecessary bullshit.

3 Didn't love Lily Thumbs up!

thumbs upthumbs upthumbs up
